Periodontics in Charlottetown

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that specializes in the gums and tissues around the roots of your teeth. Your gums protect the roots of your teeth from injury and infection. It’s important to keep them healthy by regular brushing and flossing and regular dental examinations.

Frenectomy

Sometimes children are born “tongue-tied.” This means that the tissue that connects their tongue to the floor of their mouth, called a “frenulum” is too tight. To treat this condition we make an incision to loosen the frenulum.

Scaling and Root Planing

Deep cleaning techniques such as scaling and root planing are used to prevent gum infections. Both treatments remove tartar and other irritants from the surface of the teeth and roots. This prevents inflammation which can lead to infection if it isn’t treated.

Extractions

Sometimes a tooth needs to be extracted because it’s badly damaged or infected. We may also extract a tooth during orthodontic treatment to provide space for other teeth. Extractions are performed under local anesthetic, and in the case of a damaged tooth being extracted, we’ll recommend replacement options such as a bridge or dental implant.

Regular dental exams are the best defence against gum infections. Book an examination today.
